Elderly Mental Health

Mental health issues among the elderly in Hong Kong are increasingly gaining attention. One in five community-dwelling elderly individuals suffers from mild cognitive impairment, while 7.4% have cognitive impairment disorders, with prevalence increasing with age.Approximately 70% of elderly residents in care homes are affected by cognitive impairment disorders. These conditions pose significant challenges for both the elderly and their caregivers.

Additionally,8.6% of elderly individuals suffer from depression and anxiety disorders. The risk is higher among females, those with lower education levels, individuals with multiple chronic illnesses, and those with limited social engagement. Research indicates that elderly individuals with higher mobility or those who actively participate in leisure activities tend to have better cognitive and mental health outcomes. Therefore, primary care should focus on helping the elderly manage chronic conditions and encouraging greater social participation to delay the progression of cognitive impairment.
